Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was flying this aircraft. entered the limits. He lost contact with the IAF command and meanwhile his MiG-Ace was hit by a missile in a dogfight with the Pakistan Air Force. The aircraft went down in Horan village, about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) from the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistani territory. Local villagers identified pilot Abhinandan Varthaman as an Indian pilot by the Indian flag on his parachute.

Varthaman asked the local people whether he was in India or in Pakistan, to which a boy addressed Nandan by saying “India”. Now Nandan Varthaman allegedly shouted “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”, to which the locals responded with “Pakistan Zindabad”. Now Nandan got scared and started firing in an unprofessional manner. However, the villagers soon caught Nandan Varthaman. At the same time, the soldiers of the Pakistan Army reached there and secured him from the local people and arrested him. Pilot Abhinandan Varthaman also admitted that the soldiers of the Pakistan Army had saved his life on February 27.

It may be recalled that Pakistan released Abhinandan within two days as a gesture of goodwill and to reduce the rising tension with India. The Pakistani authorities had handed over the Indian pilot to the authorities of his country at the Wagah border.
