Inauguration of India's first underwater metro

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first underwater metro that travels up to 520 meters in 45 seconds. According to Indian media ‘India Today’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first underwater metro in Kolkata today.

The Indian media is calling this underwater metro route as a historic project that will facilitate the travel of millions of people on a daily basis. According to media reports, this metro route has been built on a 16.6 km stretch under the Hooghly river.

The underwater metro service is part of the Howrah Maidan Esplanade section of the Kolkata Metro’s East-West Corridor, which will cover a distance of 4.8 km under the Hooghly River.

During the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi also took the first ride of the underwater metro along with students from several schools.

The Modi government today also laid the foundation stones of several connectivity projects worth Rs 15,400 crore on the occasion of the inauguration of the underwater metro.
