Islamabad: World Markhor Day is being celebrated today, including Pakistan. The United Nations General Assembly decided to celebrate World Markhor Day at the beginning of this month.
Markhor is also the national animal of Pakistan. Which is mostly found in Gilgit-Baltistan, Chitral, Kailash Valley, Hunza and Balochistan. Apart from Pakistan, Markhor is also found in India, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and some other regions.
According to International Organization for Conservation of Natural Resources (IUCN), Markhor is also one of such animals. whose species are facing the threat of extinction.
The United Nations had approved the resolution presented by 8 countries, including Pakistan, and announced to celebrate this day on May 24 every year. Attention should be drawn towards increasing
The resolution said that Markhor is an important animal found in Central and South Asia. The protection of the homes of which is essential from the environmental point of view. It can also help develop regional economies, improve other animal conservation efforts, and promote sustainable tourism.
In this resolution, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) was asked to organize an annual World Markhor Day.
It should be noted that after 2014, there was an increase in the number of Markhor in Pakistan. Which has increased 2 times in a decade. During this time, the number of Markhors has not decreased compared to the previous year. According to estimates, there are 3,500 to 5,000 Markhors in Pakistan. A large number of which are found in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
